Welcome students of SOC 499! This guide has been built for students and faculty to find information on the senior seminar in sociology course. SOC 499 is required for all sociology majors. This seminar continues the development of critical awareness of sociological theories and methods of research. - Comte, Auguste (1798 - 1857)French philosopher, founder of the school of philosophy known as positivism , educated in Paris.
- Durkheim, David EĢmile (1858-1917)Durkheim established many themes and contributed many concepts which continue to be important in modern sociology
- Karl Marx (1818 - 1883)German founder of modern communism, in England from 1849. With Engels, he wrote The Communist Manifesto (1848). He developed his theories of the class struggle and the economics of capitalism in Das Kapital (1867; 1885; 1895).
- Herbert Spencer (1820-1903)Herbert Spencer was an English philosopher, evolutionist, and political theorist, whose theories treated the universe and time in general with scientific minuteness and a synthesis of speculation and positivism.
- Max Weber (1864 - 1920)Weber is considered to be a key founding figure in the history of sociology. Broadly trained in economics, history, law, and philosophy, Weber brought to his sociological work a complex and rich perspective on social life.

- Anna Julia Haywood CooperAn American author, educator, sociologist, speaker, Black Liberation activist, and one of the most prominent African-American scholars in United States history.
- Carter Godwin WoodsonAn American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora, including African-American history
- Edward Franklin FrazierAn American Sociologist and author. Dissertation titled "The Negro Family in the United States (1939)"; it analyzed the historical forces that influenced the development of the African-American family from the time of slavery to the mid-1930s.
