Franklin Library: Rules and Policies

Franklin Library Rules and Regulations

  1. Food and drink are not allowed in the library (conditions apply).
    • Patrons may eat cold “finger” food, fruit, granola bars, sandwiches, chips, snacks.
    • Patrons may drink liquids in spill-proof cups, screw-top bottles, and bottled water.
    • Patrons may not eat hot food or hot plates.
  2. A quiet atmosphere is necessary for productive study. Beepers and cell phones should be turned off in the library.
  3. Government documents, periodicals, reference materials, and Special Collections materials do not circulate.
  4. Books are checked out for three weeks. Overdue books are assessed and fined 10 cents a day for the first 10 days, then the fine increases to 20 cents a day. After three weeks, the borrower is billed for the cost of each book as well as a non-refundable $10 billing fee for each.
  5. The fine for overdue reserve material is 25 cents an hour. Unreturned photocopied materials are billed at $5 or replacement cost, whichever is larger. There is also a non-refundable billing fee of $10.
  6. The fine for removing materials from Special Collections is $2 per hour. If the item is not returned in 24 hours, there is a fine of $70 or a replacement cost, whichever is larger. There is also a non-refundable billing fee of $10.
  7. The fine for overdue interlibrary loan materials is $1 per day as well as possible loss of borrowing privileges.
  8. The fine for not returning a Vanderbilt Pass is $5 per day after the five-day checkout period.
  9. A valid student ID is needed to check out all materials.
  10. Library patrons are responsible for all materials borrowed on their card.
  11. All materials in the General Collection have a loan period of 3 weeks. Materials which have not been requested by another patron may be renewed.
  12. Course reserve items are checked out on a 2-hour basis and are renewable.
  13. All library users must adhere to the rules and regulations governing conduct in the library. Infringement of the rules may result in the suspension of library privileges. Library users are expected to act in a responsible, ethical, and legal manner.
