Welcome students of PSCI 231! In PSCI 231 you will study political theories of the classic thinkers. Analyze and evaluate the basic assumptions and fundamental principles of the political theories of the naturalists, humanists, rationalists, and empiricists. This course is an introduction to political theory. We will proceed from ancient Greek assumptions about the correlation between the human psyche and human community through the Roman extension of these ideas geographically if not philosophically. Along the way, we will consider different perspectives on human nature, justice, and the consequences and responsibilities attending "freedom" and how our conversations about these issues continue to be shaped by these early considerations.
